53: Comedy contests and students with technology issues
For the past month, I have traveled twice to Cincinnati to take part in the comedy battle between Dayton and Cincinnati comedians at the Chameleon. I won first place in the first shows and fourth place in the second show. I am now in the finals of the contest.
I am extremely happy to have made it this far in the competition. I stayed away from most competitions for quite awhile as I feel they sometimes don’t reward the person who is the funniest. But after making it through the Funny Bone clash last year, I decided to try more contests.
The school semester has started and things are going well. My journalism class had seven people signed up and then four people and now back up to five people. I wish I could make people take my class. My other journalism class was canceled for lack of students.
Teaching online is something that I am having to get more and more used to. I don’t mind teaching online, but it feels more like I’m just reading and grading than actually teaching. Also, many students, even we’ve been they are good at technology, are NOT good at technology at all.

After the first week, I had one student ask me where she would find chapter 1 in the textbook. Apparently, she didn’t even know there was a book for the class. Other students just have no idea how to navigate the platform all the content is on, and I’m about fed up. When will AI just do everything for me so I can retire?
I hope to get some sun this weekend. I need to point out that this weekend is Labor Day weekend. I’ve only had two pool days all summer due to rain and Canadian wildfires. It will be nice to lay out in the sun and then have an extra day off on Monday.
